The Authorisation Board

The independent Charter School Authorisation Board will make decisions on sponsors and interventions.

The  Authorisation Board will be set up later in 2024 after the Education and Training Amendment Bill has passed.

It will approve new charter school sponsors, whether for a new school or a converting state school.

It will also receive monitoring and reporting on how sponsors are meeting the terms of their contracts including performance targets and outcomes. If sponsors are not meeting their contractual or legislative obligations, then the Authorisation Board will make decisions on interventions, including termination of a charter school contract.

It will also provide strategic advice to the Minister responsible for charter schools on key policy settings.

The legislation proposes the Authorisation Board will be formally established as a statutory board with between 5 and 9 members appointed by the Minister of Education.

The Establishment Board will continue until the  Authorisation Board is appointed.
