Information for principals, teachers and school staff

This is information for people who are:

  • planning to work at a charter school, or
  • currently employed by a state/state integrated school that is planning to convert.

Employment agreements and salary structures

Staff in state schools converting to charter schools will be transferred to the charter schools on terms and conditions which are no less favourable. Following conversion, charter schools may vary these terms by agreement with employees.

Role of the Teaching Council

The Teaching Council will continue to carry out its functions as a professional body for the teaching profession.  For certificated teachers working at a charter school, the Teaching Council will maintain their role in ensuring teachers are competent, fit to practice and accountable to professional standards.

Staff with Limited Authority to Teach (LAT) employed at charter schools will be subject to the same professional disciplinary conduct processes of the Teaching Council as LAT holders in State schools. They will not be subject the competency evaluation processes of the Teaching Council.

Access to supports indicated in the collective agreements such as teaching scholarships, awards and leave

Staff in state schools converting to charter schools will be transferred on terms and conditions which are no less favourable overall.  There will be some terms and conditions that will need to be met in different ways. For example, there are some study awards and grants (and related leave) that only teachers in state and integrated schools are eligible for. In those cases, the sponsor will need to find alternative arrangements.
